Democratic Participation
As a member, you are part of a democratic organisation. Once you have joined you can do more than just trade with the Society. If you are interested in taking part in one of the oldest democratic forms of business and helping to drive the Society onto greater success, then read on.
Members' Meetings
Your first opportunity to get involved in the democracy of Midlands Co-operative Society is at twice yearly members' meetings, held in April and October, at eleven sites across our trading area. (Posters in your local Midlands Co-op store will advertise the dates and venues. This information will also be on our website). To gain admittance to these meetings you must present your member's share book and you will need to have a minimum of £1 in your account for at least 6 months.
The Society publishes Annual and Interim reports, which can be obtained at selelcted branches prior to the meetings or you can request these to be posted direct to your home. They are also made available at the meetings. At the meetings, the directors present their report and financial statement on the progress of your Society. You can participate in the meeting; questions are invited on the report, and both directors and management are present to answer. If you wish, you can send your question in writing to the Society Secretary before the meeting. You can even put forward a motion to be voted upon by members; this must be submitted in writing 28 days before the meeting. Afterwards there's an opportunity to get together informally with fellow members. You may also cast your vote to elect representatives to your local member relations committee and regional committee. Votes can also be cast at local Society stores prior to the Annual Meeting.
